Blackpool Zoo

Generating great PR to support footfall

Blackpool Zoo is a top tourist destination located in Britain’s favourite seaside resort.

ICG has been working with the marketing team on PR and design support since 2008.  Our knowledge of the zoo, animal care, conservation and research has grown incredibly during that time.

We have developed great relationships with staff from all departments to deliver timely and impactful media coverage as well as support crisis communications and wider marketing activity.

Mammoth efforts

ICG has been at the very heart of many new investments at the zoo including Project Elephant Base Camp.

The  new multi-million pound facility was opened in 2017 to care for a herd of magnificent Asian elephants. The project included the arrival of four elephants from Twycross Zoo and we worked closely with the BBC to create a special, one-off documentary called Elephants on the Move.

ICG secured an exclusive with ITV’s This Morning, when we welcomed TV vet, Scott Miller to share the news that two of Blackpool Zoo’s elephants were pregnant and due to give birth.

When the not so little ones arrive it will be the start of a new chapter at Project Elephant Base Camp.

Viral success

When Blackpool Zoo posted a vacancy for a human seagull deterrent it broke the internet. Within 48 hours news of the extraordinary job role, which involved the successful applicant wearing an inflatable eagle costume, had taken off.

Coverage included This Morning, Loose Women, Have I Got News For You, Channel 4 News, Channel 5 News, GB News, Granada Reports, BBC North West Tonight, BBC Radio One, The Project in Australia and James Corden even chatted about it on his last ever Late Late Show in America.

Another viral success came after the birth of Prince Louis in April 2018. Our team spotted the golden opportunity to name a new born camel after the fourth in line to the throne.

A media release announcing the news was sent within 60 seconds of the Kensington Palace announcement and every single national newspaper and TV station covered the story, with countries such as Italy, Canada, Egypt, America, Australia following suit to honour the new prince and his namesake camel.

Lights, camera, action!

We have secured some incredible filming opportunities at Blackpool Zoo for a whole host of TV programmes.

Blue Peter presenters have learned how to become sea lion keepers, Good Morning Britain celebrated Blackpool FC’s first shot at the premiere league and Alan Titchmarsh brought the crew from Love Your Garden for a makeover.

We worked with The One Show to create a five minute piece with Strictly Come Dancing winner,  Bill Bailey, who spent the day with keeper Peter Morris.

We also secured an exclusive with This Morning to announce that the zoo was set to welcome two baby elephants for the first time in its history.

“Thank you so much for all your hard work for our anniversary”

Head of Marketing, Blackpool Zoo

Really wild creative

Our deep understanding of every corner of the zoo from The Big Cat Habitat to Wolf Ridge meant we are perfectly placed to help with other areas of marketing.

The zoo’s annual  trifold leaflet promotes everything it has to offer including new arrivals and investments.

Our design team created an informative and striking new leaflet, using bold colours and patterns alongside stunning photography.

The zoo team also approached ICG for a refresh of its site map to help guide visitors around the attraction.

Our designer used an isometric style with 3D elements in a new layout alongside a numbering system and illustrations to make it easier for people to find their favourite animals.
